Recognition can go a long way

Posted on | September 29, 2009 | No Comments

It sounds simple, it really does, but in today’s society, a lot of people are too busy to tell someone that they appreciate what they have done.  Getting back to basics, simple recognition can make a big difference.

In my son’s school (actually, this may be a feature of Elementary schools on Nova Scotia), they have a “Gotcha Program”.  In essence, what it is, is a reward system for reinforcing positive behavior.  Standing in line quietly, listening intently, picking up garbage – these can all earn you a “Gotcha”.   The more “Gotcha’s” you get, the more chances you get to win a monthly prize.

Since the beginning of school, my son has gotten 3 “Gotcha’s” that I know of.  Each time he gets one, the teacher announces it in class, and the kids clap.  His most recent one was received yesterday for picking up toys without being asked.  I asked him why he picks up toys at school, and it’s a fight to get him to do it at home.  His reply?

Dad, I wanted a “Gotcha”.
